Dance music is a broad term that refers to any kind of music that is created specifically for people to dance to. Considering that music is very personal and its uses are subjective, it can be hard to distinguish dance music from other types and to pinpoint its exact origins. Dance music can also be called Electronic Dance Music or EDM. While EDM, and its many musical genres, may seem new, its actually been around since the 1970s, developing over the years as a symbol of contemporary culture. For decades, the music industry has been providing energy-charged electronic music to raving crowds. But before we recognized these dance parties as raves as we do today, we simply called them discos. Three different kinds of Dance music are Disco, Techno and House. House music gives off a warm sort of vibe and generally adds a positive feeling to the room. Techno Music some might describe techno as cold or mechanical quite the opposite of the warm house music discussed above. It includes plenty of experimental sounds and strives to give off a futuristic feel much of the time. Disco music aimed to move crowds of people on the dance floor, using drum machines and electronic instruments to create synthesized rhythms. During the first half of the 1980s, keyboards and electronic drum kits figured prominently in a number of hugely successful records. Like the music of the 1960s, these songs werent specifically created for dancing, but they had an upbeat tempo and fun sensibility that was common in disco. In the UK, on the other hand, bands like the Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode began releasing a different style of electronic music that also reflects disco;s influence. The synth heavy style of bands like Depeche Mode is sometimes referred to as synth pop for its blend of popular styles and heavy use of synthesizers. Drum machines and synthesizers were used more heavily after the disco days, but these electronic music makers were joined by innovations like MIDIt, which revolutionized the way electronic instruments could communicate.
An intro is typically a multiple of 16 beats in length, and often introduces a new instrument or sound every 32 beats. Some intros open with drums and gradually add layers of instruments. A buildup or other aural cue lets you know it is over. Most dance music tracks open with what is often called a four-on-the-floor; rhythm, with the kick drum bumping out a steady boom boom boom boom. Each boom is a beat. It sounds obvious, but when you nod your head or tap your foot, youre really just keeping time with the beat. A phrase is a segment of music, whether a melody or a rhythm, that has a complete musical sense of its own. Put more simply, it has a natural sense of structural completeness a beginning, a middle and an end. For example, you might hear a synth melody that repeats multiple times. Each repetition is probably a phrase it usually consists of 32 or 64 beats (8 or 16 bars), but it can be shorter. Its like a sentence, where each beat is like a word.

Formed on an October night in 1976 following drinks at an Athens, GA, Chinese restaurant, the band played their first gig at a friends house on Valentines Day 1977. Naming themselves after Southern slang for exaggerated bouffant hairdos, the newly-christened B-52s (Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson) began weekend road trips to New York City for gigs at CBGBs and a handful of other venues. In just two albums, the B-52s created a lexicon of songs, styles, phrases and images which would set the standard for the development of the alternative music scene for the next decade. The success of Mesopotamia, produced by David Byrne (1982), and Whammy! (1983) positioned the B-52s as MTV regulars as well as alternative radio staples. Cosmic Thing soared to the top of the Billboard Album chart, sold five million copies and yielded their first-ever Hot 10 hits Love Shack and Roam and a Top 40 hit with Deadbeat Club. The B-52s advanced their reputation as the greatest party band on the planet to a whole new generation of music fans. They played to a sold-out audience worldwide on a tour that would last more than 18 months, including an Earth Day gig before nearly 750,000 people in New York Citys Central Park.
They had a member leave the band for a period of time before returning to the band. As a trio, Fred, Keith and Kate re-enlisted the tag team of Was and Rodgers to produce the energetic Good Stuff (1992). With its popular title cut and concert favorite Is That You Mo-Dean?, Good Stuff is more than just a worthy follow-up to Cosmic Thing the album stands as the groups most overtly political album. Were out there to entertain people, said Fred, but its great to get people thinking and dancing at the same time. In 2008 the B-52s released their first new album in 16 years, the aptly titled Funplex. With its primal guitar hooks, driving drums and the B-52s unmistakable vocal style, Funplex is instantly recognizable as quintessential and contemporary B-52s. Newsweek Magazine declared, Like a sonic shot of vitamin B12, the dance floor beats, fuzzy guitar riffs and happy, shiny lyrics keep the energy going. The release of a special early show from August 1979, pulled from deep within the Warner Brothers vault. They noted, We opened for the Talking Heads at the Berklee Center in Boston just six weeks after our first record was released. We were a little scared of the audience, so we kept our heads down and focused and we danced like mad when there was a break! Ricky was so fierce on the guitar so intense it was all so raw and live.
